Junior Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) poured in a game-high 26 points to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women’s basketball team to a 68-58 victory against American International College on Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.

Lorenzen was an efficient 10 of 15 from the floor, including 1 of 2 from long distance, and 5 of 6 from the stripe, while grabbing five rebounds and dishing a pair of assists. Senior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) tallied 12 points (3-10 FG, 6-6 FT), four rebounds, two helpers and a pair of steals, while sophomore Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) netted 11 points (4-10 FG, 2-6 3-FG, 1-2 FT) and collected a pair of rebounds.

Dana Watts led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Alyssa Guyon added 12 points.

Four points from Lorenzen powered a 6-0 run for Southern New Hampshire over the game’s opening 1:26, but American International would respond with eight straight to take an 8-6 lead at the 7:13 mark of the first quarter. Over a minute later, the Penmen would craft a stanza-closing 16-5 run – buoyed by five points from Terry and four from Lorenzen – to open a 25-15 advantage after one.

The gap was 11 three-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter when the Yellow Jackets ripped off a 17-3 run – with seven points from Guyon and six from Watts – to grab a 37-34 lead with half a minute to play. Junior Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) would drop in a layup in the final 10 seconds to trim the SNHU deficit to 37-36 at the break.

The teams swapped baskets to start the second half before Southern New Hampshire used five scorers to craft an 11-1 run – led by four points from sophomore Amanda Kelly (Bethpage, N.Y.) – that gave it a 49-40 lead with 2:49 left in the third quarter. A pair of free throws from senior Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) at the 7:11 mark put the Penmen in front for good at 40-39. SNHU would carry a 50-43 lead into the final frame.

Back-to-back layups from Lorenzen to start the stanza extended the lead to 11 at 54-43 less than a minute in. AIC would climb within seven, but a Terry triple would spark a 6-0 run that all but sealed the win for the Penmen at 62-49 with 2:35 remaining. The Yellow Jackets would not get closer than eight the rest of the way.

Camara posted eight points (3-8 FG, 2-4 FT) and five rebounds, while Kelly recorded four points (2-3 FG), four rebounds, two assists and a steal in 12 minutes off the bench. Freshman Sarah Deyo (Attleboro, Mass.) grabbed a team-high 10 boards.

The Penmen return to action Tuesday, Jan. 23 (5:30 p.m.) when they take on Adelphi University. The next home game for SNHU is Saturday, Jan. 27 (1:30 p.m.) when it plays host to the University of New Haven at the Fieldhouse on Pink Day.
