The Men’s Tennis Team put forth an amazing performance at the ITA East Regional Championships during the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York last month. Graduate Student Tiago Fernandes made it to the singles finals in a historic run and brothers Willem (’20) and Bas Van Biezen (’20) made it to the doubles finals match. Both matches were losses, however they showed the amount of depth the men’s tennis team has.

In what he calls “a really good experience,” Fernandes was satisfied with his showing at the ITA’s. He said the goal was to win it all, but his experience this September was “better than last year” when he lost in the semifinal round.

This was the first time an SNHU student has ever made it this far in the tournament. He played 11 matches over the course of four days. The competition was fierce, but Fernandes was still able to withhold strength to make it to the final match.

Even though he wasn’t able to close out in the finals, Fernandes looks forward to bringing his experience from this September to the start of the regular season that will begin after winter break. He hopes to stay undefeated in the conference.

While there are still a few matches left in the fall season, including a short trip back to New York, Fernandes and the rest of the SNHU tennis team start their regular season in mid-February. They all hope to keep rolling on the success they found at the ITAs.
