When SNHU’s new Intramural Cup (IM Cup) kicked off this fall, it introduced more than just another competition, it is an introduction to a new campus tradition designed to connect students through friendly rivalry, teamwork, and school spirit. This year long challenge is a culmination of all intramural sports. Teams are allowed up to 15 members, who will be the participating athletes for the intramural sports seasons and tournaments.

The IM Cup was originally inspired by a similar idea from Northeastern University. According to Camaron Phillips, who oversees SNHU’s intramural sports program, the concept was first brought forward by Brooke Russell, the Campus Recreation Administrator, and then adapted for the university. While the basic structure remains similar to Northeastern’s, SNHU has added its own twist, focusing not only on winning, but on participation and consistency. “We really want to tie it to registering and playing a lot of stuff…not just points for winning,” Phillips explained. “We’re giving every team points for registering and also for doing well.”

Teams earn points throughout the academic year — ten for registering and up to sixty for placing first in each league. The key, Phillips noted, is staying active. “Teams who are consistent throughout the year have the best shot,” he said. “Consistency is key.” Beyond the scoreboard, the IM Cup aims to build a sense of history and connection among SNHU students. At the end of the year, the winning team receives custom gear, including rain jackets and their team’s name engraved on a trophy displayed in the Fitness Center.

While the IM Cup rewards dedication, it also encourages players to step outside their comfort zones. “You’re going to have some people who stick with their niche,” Phillips said “But the teams who try to get registration points are probably going to be your winners. That’s the purpose behind the Cup, that more people are trying and doing new and different things.” Ultimately, Phillips says the IM Cup is about community. A way to give students a reason to play, cheer, and get involved.

The second season of Fall intramurals begins this week with the following leagues:

  • Futsal – Monday nights in the Small Gym
  • Basketball (Recreation and Competitive) – Tuesday nights in the Field House
  • Doubles Pickleball – Wednesday nights in the Small Gym
  • Dodgeball – Wednesday nights in the Small Gym
