For those of you living on campus, you may be wondering about roommates. Here at SNHU, freshmen are given the opportunity to choose a roommate in one of two ways.

The first option is to request a roommate. Requesting is made possible by having you and your roommate both agree to choose each other during the housing selection process.

Rest assured there is another option for those that do not have a roommate readily in mind. The second option for roommate selection is made possible through random pairing.

After answering a series of questions designed to gather individual living preferences, a random student will be assigned to you. Your random roommate will be carefully chosen by matching students with similar living preferences.

Everyone’s roommate experience is going to be different, but here are a couple of tips for those that don’t know what to expect.

Roommates may take some getting used to. Many incoming freshmen have never had to share a room with another individual. Do not panic if the transition takes some time.

Maintain open communication with your roommate. If both you and your roommate have a clear understanding of the rules, living with each other will be much easier. If there is ever an issue, try to first resolve it by communicating with each other. If that is unproductive consider meeting with your Resident Assistant (RA) or Resident Director (RD).

Roommate selection is not permanent. If you are having a difficult time living with your roommate, options are available to you. By talking with your Resident Assistant, changes can be made to make your living experience at SNHU comfortable.

Overall, roommates can be a great way to meet new people and get involved on campus. Enjoy getting to know not only your roommate, but also other residents on your floor and in your building.
