Southern New Hampshire University’s (SNHU) second fall fiction short story competition kicks off this November with The Penmen Review. The call for submissions opens Nov. 7 and will close at the end of the month.

Short stories may be on any subject or theme, and they must be original work. Submissions will be judged by a panel of experts on originality, thought process, structure and grammatical correctness.

The competition is open to all students, including online, graduate, and undergraduate, as well as the general public. The Penmen Review reserves the right to reject any submission that does not adhere to contest guidelines.

Fall fiction short story submissions must be submitted as a Word document. They must also be double-spaced, no longer than 1,500 words, titled with Fall Fiction Competition at the top of the first page, and formatted with the writer’s name and contact information at the top left of the first page.

When submitting an entry, students are acknowledging that SNHU has the right to publish their short story entry and use their words, name, and likeness in related marketing materials.

Five semi-finalists will be determined by a panel of judges. The public will have a chance to weigh in by voting for one of the semi-final entries. The combined scores of both the judges and the public vote will determine the top three winners.

Writing-themed prize packages will be awarded to the top three, as well as three scholarships to apply toward tuition at Southern New Hampshire University’s College of Online and Continuing Education. First, second and third prize scholarship amounts are as follows: $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.

Last year’s winners were online students Syche Phillips, Michele Meehan, and Virginia Spotts. All students are encouraged to submit to the competition for the opportunity to add their name to the list.
