“War for the Planet of the Apes” is the third film in the 2011 reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Following the events of “Dawn,”“War” follows Caesar and his fellow apes in a fight to survive against what remains of humanity’s military force. Thankfully, “War” continues the string of excellent movies, making for another great addition to the series.
All of the elements from the past two “Apes” films carry over into “War,” from the excellent acting, to the remarkable digital effects and great storytelling that this series is now known for. It’s all top notch, showing Caesar at his highest and lowest points, making the audience feel for him all the way through.
The only small hiccups are that, first, you must see the other films to fully enjoy “War for the Planet of the Apes”. Being with Caesar from his childhood to this point is what gives the movie a lot of its impact and drama, watching as he evolves as a character and literally grows with each installment. Second, while the villain, Woody Harrelson’s unnamed Colonel, is great, he does not seem to have the same impact that “Dawn’s” Koba did. A small nitpick overall, but worth mentioning.
This film also keeps the central theme alive: that apes and humans are not as different as each side believes themselves to be. This as the main idea is what helps keep this film, and its predecessors, relatable and interesting even as it stars English speaking Apes. That coupled with good action, a relatable hero, a great story and you have an excellent summer movie. An incredible film for all moviegoers to enjoy that should not be missed.
