“Love, Simon” stars Nick Robinson as Simon Spier, an average, seventeen-year-old boy. He leads a stereotypical, normal life aside from the fact that he has to keep one big secret: He is gay. Simon’s world is suddenly changed when a post is made on his high school’s gossip website from an anonymous user named Blue, who reveals that their biggest secret is that they are also gay. Simon and Blue start an online relationship, and the movie revolves around Simon trying to keep his secret from those closest to him while also trying to figure out who Blue might be.
The movie inflicted a roller-coaster ride of emotions from start to finish. It combined a perfect balance of romance, humor and drama in its one hour and fifty minutes of running time, and it presented a variety of situations that any viewer could relate to.
The soundtrack, which included songs from Bleachers, The 1975, Khalid and other popular artists, emphasized the main coming of age themes that were present and contributed to the heart-warming tone of the movie.
There is only one major criticism that I can think of, and it is just how perfect Simon’s life was. Many people in the LGBT community and otherwise don’t lead perfect lives, and as a result, it can be even harder for them to come out than it would be for Simon. That being said, I don’t know how accurately the movie represents the majority of the LGBTQ community.
However, it still does a great job at demonstrating some other major issues that those in the LGBTQ community have to deal with before they decide to come out, such as hiding who they truly are.
Overall, “Love, Simon” was a beautiful and compelling story with fairly accurate representation of what it’s like to be a gay teenager in today’s society. Nick Robinson and the supporting actors and actresses did a wonderful job embodying the different struggles and challenging situations that all young adults face as they try to navigate love and themselves. I would highly recommend going to see this movie with a couple of friends over the weekend, and make sure to bring tissues.
