Every year, SNHU holds a Humanities Festival that celebrates philosophy, language, history, music and performing arts, global culture, and art. Dr. Deborah Varat, Director of Public Humanities Initiative, is the primary organizer for this event and, in an interview with the press, expressed a great deal of excitement about this year’s festival.
According to Dr. Varat, the Humanities Festival, which will be held on Wednesday, April 16 from 2-5 pm, is to have the biggest and most varied array of experiences in this event series so far. This includes numerous new activities and a record-breaking number of classes and clubs here at SNHU being involved.
The activities will be split into six categories: philosophy, language, music and performing arts, global culture, and art. These activities will include things from a historical baseball recreation to a world geography quiz, a spelling bee, and even a rock concert.
Dr. Varat discusses the purpose behind this large annual event. Overall, the goal is to celebrate the humanities in a fun, interactive, and intellectual way. She further says, “The humanities tend to be the support system to the big majors on campus and primarily serving the Gen Ed requirements.” The humanities are often embraced, but forgotten by some. This festival offers a day to display these studies on their own terms and really be able to appreciate their value not only here at SNHU but around the world.
Many classes on campus require students to attend the festival for class credit, and while this is important and appreciated, it is also suggested that all students go, regardless of whether it is for a class or not. The Humanities Festival is meant to be fun and educational for all students. With activities, free food, and lots of prizes, it should be a good time for anyone who can make it.
Finally, a message from Dr. Deborah Varat: “The festival this year is the result of months of planning, collaboration between students and faculty, and many moments of creative inspiration. The festival is the culmination of everything that SNHU is so good at. We can’t wait to see you all out on the Green Space that afternoon!” Please direct any questions regarding the festival to d.varat@snhu.edu.
